Learning Life Lessons through a Video Game

Sometimes, the most important life lessons come to us in rather unexpected ways. For me, they came in the form of a video game.

I recently finished playing Toby Fox’s game Undertale. The game was a joy to play, perhaps the best one I’ve experienced so far. It has all the elements for the perfect video game–great storyline, beautiful soundtrack, lovable characters (yes, enemies included). However, there was one thing in this game that really stood out to me: how much relevant lessons and wisdom were taught throughout it. Here’s what I learned from Undertale:

Be understanding, as things aren’t always as they seem

Some of the battles were long and gruesome–battles that made you feel like there was no hope, as if your enemies truly wanted nothing more than to see you dead. If you continued to battle (without choosing to kill), you would see there was more to the situation than initially perceived. Instead you recognize that either there was some misunderstanding, or that the ‘enemy’ felt undeserving of mercy, and you’ll realize no one had genuinely intended to harm you. Rather than resorting to violence, be understanding and look for the underlying meaning behind what is going on.

Be yourself, your true self is what you should be proud to show others

Whether you’re trying to impress someone, or simply wanting to fit in, it can be difficult to stay true to ourselves. Especially if your interests and personality aren’t considered “normal.” But when you show your true self, you’ll realize that your uniqueness is what draws others towards you. Don’t be afraid to loosen up and be proud of who you are!

Forgive, as the past does not reflect the future

We all make mistakes that we’re often reminded of when painful memories of our past come up. But regardless of what you or others have done, regardless of what is going on in the present, there is always the ability to improve. You are capable of change. And for that reason, we should forgive all those who have hurt us. By forgiving others, not only do you give them a chance to better themselves and for you to see them in another light, but you free yourself in the process.

Work towards your goals, but don’t forget to enjoy the journey

When we work towards a goal, we often become so focused on achieving the end result that we forget to enjoy the process. When I started the game, I just couldn’t wait to complete it and see the True Pacifist ending that was considered satisfying by so many players. Fortunately, I reminded myself to take my time with the game and enjoy every moment. I spent time exploring new places, talking to each character I met, and fully immersing myself in the storyline. I felt like I’d made so many friends and taken away so many wonderful memories that I wish I could relive again and again. Whatever you’re doing, don’t forget to enjoy the process–it’s about the journey, not the destination. Find ways to make your journey memorable!

Be kind & compassionate, your actions matter

Your choice of playing the game peacefully or violently affects the ending. The only way to achieve the happy ending requires sparing all enemies, no bloodshed allowed. The True Pacifist ending is the ultimate perfect ending where all of the characters’ dreams come true, and everyone lives together peacefully. The heartfelt, yet victorious songs played at the end make it even better. This ending is a far cry from the ending of the Genocide route, which I can only describe as terrifying, from what I’ve seen from players that took it. Sure, taking that path may be quicker, but a path without sparing others and showing mercy will leave you feeling unfulfilled. Having kindness and compassion will lead you to a place where you can feel fulfilled and satisfied, as shown by the concept of having outcomes affected by our actions.

Acknowledge our differences, but strive to live alongside each other peacefully

In Undertale, humans and monsters had lived together in the world. However, a war was declared between the two races, leaving the monsters trapped in an underground universe sealed by the victorious humans. At the end of the True Pacifist route, after the human child (protagonist) has fallen into the underground universe, and battled and befriended the monsters, the barrier separating the two races breaks, ending the game with the two races living amongst each other peacefully once again. This goes to show that despite our differences, we all can live and work together peacefully. Rather than having differences set us apart, we can allow them to unite us.

Undertale was truly a memorable experience. It showed me the importance of having kindness and compassion for myself and for others. It taught me to live in the moment, as each point in time is unique and cannot be recreated. It reminded me to love myself and others, and to remember that those around me care about my well-being. As one of the monsters said, “take care of yourself, kid. ‘Cause someone really cares about you.”

So thank you, Undertale, for teaching me important life lessons. Thank you, monsters of the Underground, for forming wholesome friendships with me and being allies in my journey. And to Toby Fox, thank you for touching the hearts of so many players with such a beautiful game. And for showing the great power of love and determination that we can apply throughout our lives. Thanks to you, and thanks to Undertale, we are filled with Determination.
