How to Embrace Change

This year is full of endings and beginnings. This year taught many of us that changes can come quickly and unexpectedly. I have recently realized that yet another thing that has played a big role in my identity, will no longer be a part of my life this year: orchestra.

Since middle school, playing in orchestras has become part of my daily routine. Each school year is spent with rehearsals and concerts that take up most of my extracurricular activities, and summertime is dedicated to preparing for auditions and occasionally attending music camps. Naturally, I expected this year to be the same.

However, earlier this summer, I sprained my wrist, and as it’s still healing, it’s been a while since I’ve been able to play my violin. And now, as the new school year approaches, so does my first school year without orchestra. At first thought, this was devastating to me. After all, this was my final semester of undergrad, and I was looking forward to my last concerts and spending time with fellow musicians. Senior year without orchestra seemed unimaginable.

As I looked for classes to fill the remaining credits in place of orchestra, it came to mind that this was the perfect opportunity to enhance my other interests. I’ll now have the chance to take singing lessons, something I had previously struggled to find enough time for. I’ll also have more time to spend with friends and dance crew, rather than spending countless hours in the practice room each day. Instead of being upset over what I can’t change, this is the time to look forward and embrace the wonderful new opportunities that await.

When life presents us with difficulties, it becomes a lesson about being flexible and overcoming obstacles, no matter how big or small they may be. This experience has also shown me that when you lose something, life will compensate you with something else. After all, life is an unpredictable adventure. By going with the flow and embracing the present moment, you’ll see life as a beautiful journey, and know that the universe is always with you, not against you.

Throughout life, there will be times when things don’t go as anticipated–there may be unexpected breaks in your routine or plans that get pushed to the wayside. Whether that’s a good or bad thing, depends on your perspective. By directing your thoughts towards the positive, even in a ‘negative’ situation, you will see the silver lining, and new opportunities and lessons will present themselves that you may not have otherwise come across. While there may be fond memories in your past, remember not to dwell on what must be left behind. Walk the path towards your new world with grace and courage, and remember: you’re always at the right place at the right time. Who knows, this new path might just change your life for the better. But you’ll never find out until you decide to embrace it.

As for my sprained wrist, I’m mending just fine. Perhaps this was a lesson for me to be more careful in the future. Or perhaps, life happens just as it should.
